Reporter Accidentally Sparks Queen Elizabeth Death Rumor
That Internet panic you heard about this morning? Just the sound of Twitter users everywhere reacting to a post from a BBC reporter announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
NBC reports that journalist Ahmen Khawaja posted on Twitter that the British monarch had been taken to the hospital before posting that the queen had passed away. The inaccurate tweet was quickly removed, but not before the report was picked up by several media outlets.
According to a BBC spokesperson, the mistake resulted from "a technical rehearsal for an obituary," and the news organization apologized for the mishap.
Contributing to the frenzy was the fact that the queen had previously attended a medical checkup at the hospital.
