The Easiest Ways to Solve Your Biggest Brow Problems

Not everyone can be blessed with the eyebrows of a movie star. Cue the jealousy. But thanks to pencils, gels, wands, and even complete salons devoted to grooming them, we can at least fake havingLily Collins‘ brows. Although there are a number of different options out there, sometimes it can be a tad confusing as to which products or treatments to use to address your specific issue. To (finally!) solve all of your eyebrow problems once and for all we recruited Wink Bar CEO and Founder,Umbreen Sheikh, to give us a breakdown of common brow problems and exactly how to remedy them.
If your brows are sparse
If you’re lacking a little hair up there, Sheikh suggests reaching for a brow pencil because it allows you to mimic the look of hairs and fill in sparseness. We likeLaura Mercier Eyebrow Pencil(, sephora.com), which has a very light formula that’s easily blended. To create a natural look, make light mini strokes to create the hairs of the brow, as opposed to drawing on a straight line. Remember, when applying with a pencil, build product up the brow slowly, reminds Sheikh.
If your brows are too light
Those with light brown or blonde hairs, should consider visiting a professional salon for a brow tint. Although a bit more pricey than say a pencil or gel, brow tints have their benefits. They last up to four to six weeks and don’t require daily shading, says Sheikh. But if you’re not ready to make the jump into full tinted territory, try a shading palette like Too Faced Brow Envy Brow Shaping & Defining Kit(, sephora.com), which contains four shades to fill in, darken, and accentuate brows.
If your brows are short
Trust us, short and squat are not adjectives you want to describe your brows. To elongate brows, Sheikh suggests reaching for a pencil to make light, feathery strokes.Wander Beauty Frame Your Face Micro Brow Pencil(, wanderbeauty.com) is ideal for adding a little flick to the end of your brow. Looking for more of a permanent solution? Try extensions. Yes, they’re exactly what they sound like: hundreds of tiny hairs adhered to your brow to give the illusion of natural hair. Although brow extensions require maintenance, the process might totally be worth it for someone with half a brow!
If your brows are messy
When you wake up and everything, including your brows, look like they’ve been through the ringer, reach for a tinted brow gel to put little hairs back in place. Brow gels—like editor favorite Glossier Boy Brow(, )—have thicker formulas and are designed to tame thebrowswhile adding color, explains Sheikh.
If you have a scar or bald spot
For some of us bald spots are a result of over plucking, for others they come from a badminton racket to the face in fourth grade gym class. No matter how your bald spot came to be, there’s a simple fix. A gel pencil likeIT Cosmetics Brow Power Waterproof Perfector 5-in-1 Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil(, ) is a great option to hide a blank space, as its formula deposits more color and seals the hair in place.
If your brows are shapeless
This is probably the most common complaint among brow mishap sufferers. For brows that lack shape, it’s best to leave it to the pros. “Yourbrowsare way too important on your face to make a mistake,” says Sheikh. To tame brows between salon visits, apply a gel with a spoolie brush in an upward motion to hold hairs in place. “Any hairs that are completely out of place can be covered with a dab of concealer,” Sheikh adds.
