What is a LED TV?

Every year more and more new terms appear, it's impossible to keep up with all this and know everything. Technique is evolving in our time at a rapid pace. And the Internet will always come to our aid and tell you about any innovations. Particularly difficult task now facing buyers when choosing a TV.

What is LED TV

It would be logical to begin with the interpretation of the abbreviation LED, which in English sounds like this: light-emitting diode. A translation into Russian is much simpler - "LED". But you can not call LED TV LED TV. What could all this mean?

Roughly speaking, LED TV is an LCD (LCD) TV. To understand what is the difference between one and the other, let us turn to the features of LCD TVs. Their main part is a matrix with pixels (luminous dots). By the way, the number of these pixels determines the screen resolution (for example, 640x480 = 307,200 pixels). So on LCD TVs, the matrix is illuminated with cold cathode fluorescent lamps. And in LED TVs, light sources are LEDs.This is considered a great advantage of modern technology, because the use of LEDs allows LED TVs to be very thin. Their thickness is about 2.5 cm. LED TVs will fit into any interior practically. Thus, we get lower power consumption (40% lower than LCD TVs of the same size), longer service life and better contrast, which is not so far from the well-known competitor of LCD TVs - plasma panels. Just imagine what natural and deep black color will be in led televisions, if their contrast level reaches a value of 1,000,000: 1.

Now, remember the big minus of LCD TVs - distortion when moving objects are displayed ... There will be no such drawback on LED TVs due to the frame refresh rate up to 200 Hz. You, probably, immediately understood what an LED TV is and imagined a perfect video game or a long-awaited sports match. Of course, this technology of using LED backlighting will sooner or later become the standard and push traditional technology out of the market. LED TVs do not need to be perceived as their new look,This is just a technical development of LCD TVs.

To understand what LED TV is, let's take a closer look at its LED lighting. There are two types of it:

  1. White LED - LED-elements are located around the perimeter of the matrix, that is, the light is distributed evenly, thanks to a special light guide panel.
  2. RGB LED - LED-elements are located throughout the area of illumination, and the light elements have different colors, that is, different areas of the screen are highlighted in different colors, and this increases the quality of color reproduction. Of course, this type of LED backlight will be more expensive, but you can find your advantages everywhere. Due to such high prices, many companies, for example, Samsung, have to give up this RGB LED and continue to work with side illumination.

It became more difficult to judge the advantages of backlighting when in 2009 Toshiba declared that “white” backlighting is even more efficient than the second RGB LED.

We want to draw attention to another advantage of LED TVs. They can be considered more environmentally friendly than conventional LCD. CCFL lamps (which are used for backlighting on LCD televisions) contain mercury, and there is no mercury in the LEDs. Not that this is a breakthrough in engineering, but a big step forward.Experts recommend choosing LED TVs, despite the fact that they are twice as expensive as LCD TVs. But now you know what a led television is, and you realize that gradually it will become the standard in the production of televisions.
